Personal Learning Network (PLN): Social media Matrix
1.
What is
a PLN? Why is the careful selection of resources important to establishing your
PLN?
A Personal Learning Newtwork(PLN) is a list of social media that can be used specifically for your own pesonnal professional growth and professional develop in a specific way that you choose. In my case I am formatting my personal list around classroom resources that can help me reach my daily goal and objectives I want my students to master. The more specific I am on what I want the outcome to be, the more specific I am about what criteria must be met to be on my PLN. In other words I plan on having mutiple PLN's for various disciplines.
2.
What
role do Twitter® and LinkedIn® play as social media tools?
How can these channels benefit your professional development?
I believe both Twitter and LinkedIn play different perspective roles in social media. Twitter in my opinion seems to be more daily use, where LinkedIn seems to be a standing more professional resourse that is more of ones own personal electronic resume. Twitter is what is at the pulse of most peoples fingertips and can be arraged in the format on personal and professional interest. It is like a constant news feed of information, worthy or not, but still information. Twitter can be used for professional groth in the arena of finding out if others have up to dat e information of what you are searching for. In my own persinal professional development I use it as a communication tool for my cheerleading squad as they post upcoming events and reminders. It is the teams electronic calander with many many pictures of course, but their are still guidelines.
LinkedIn to me seems to more of a electronic resume.I took much time to bulid mine only to never be able to access it again. I wish I could as often there is a link to upload that information when applying for a job. My plan is to start over a build a new account. I feel professionally it is required when searching for a new position or profession.
3.
Can a PLN
take the place of formal classroom training? Explain your response.
I absolutely believe it can, and because of this class I am reformatting my own classroom for the fall as I type. Social learning is the wave of the future and to keep our students on that fast track we can provide them with a Classroom PLN. I am using the one I am buidling here to make it acess points for my students. I am planning on going paper free this term and having each student start a blog, and that is where all of the class notes and recipes are going to go. Why not have everything in one place and then there is always something they can work on. Teaching Bell to Bell will never be an issue. Not only will I provide them with a list of resources, they will need to develop thier own that will be specific to their own interests. Thee are so many visual aides that the students can also link into and create visual representations along with their PLN. I have high hopes this format will be a huge success.

Culinary.net is a Facebook page that focusses on health and wellness and cooking and sharing . It is a beautiful representation of social media with almost 250,000 likes. The site was started in 2010 by some foodies (There was no specific author) that love to cook and share recipes with people around the world.
"
Culinary.net is much more than a website. It is truly a network (thus the .net), a digital ecosystem composed of members of the culinary community interacting with consumers through websites, blogs and social media.
If you like to cook, you’ve come to the right place. We have thousands of kitchen-tested recipes for just about every occasion. We also have how-to videos, helpful articles, coupons and more."
I am going to use this as a resourse for my students as they build their journal and develop their own electronic cookbook. The pictures are amazing and it is very user friendly. I think my kids are going to love it, and I made it a personal favorite.
Culinary Concoctions by Peabody on Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/culinaryconcoctionsbypeabody/
This seems to be another wonderful Facebook page by "Mrs. Peabody" who loves desserts and is married to a very picky eater. Her graphics are eye catching and very user friendly. The information will be perfect for our desserts week. The link to her website has many age approprite recipes and her passion for creating tasty treats is engaging. Might give my students inspiration as she is an individual not a company providing recipes. He sence of humor is apparent in her message.

The Arizona Culinary Institute is also a page on Facebook. It is a local culinary school that has opportunites available to my students. Many of my students would like to pursue a career in culinary and one of my state standards I need to reach is discussing those career paths with them.
Being able to read about the opportunities the school offers will get them excited about the field and see what the industry expectations are for them as they perpare to graduate from high school and move onto seconday school.

https://www.facebook.com/scottsdaleculinaryfestival/?fref=ts
Scottdale Culinary Festival is also a page on Facebook that is created by the IT section of the Festival. This site is important in many ways not only to me persoanlly but as opportunities for my students. The festival is in June and offers myself and my students a chance to see the culinary creations of others. I go every year and encourage my students to ttend as well. The site also has ongoing information of other upcoming culinary events with over 16.000 favorites.
www.FoodSafety.Gov
https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=foodsafetygov
This link in Facebook was founded in 2009 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Safety and claim to be the one stop shop to all thing related to food safety. This site is essential to my class as the first AZ State standard I need to cover is safety and sanitation. This has many student friendly graphics and videos. They also supply a playform for feedback and collaboration.
The best part they offer all these links as well to expand the information beyond their own social site:
The charts in infographics are endless!! My favorite site so far!!
Food Safety News is yet another noteworthy site on Facebook, I am at this point very embarrassed that I had no clue all of these resources were out there in Facebook land..unbelievable!! This page was founded by Marier Clark, and she posts a daily news update on all thing rtelated to food safety.
"
At FoodSafetyNews.com we have created one place that pulls it all together for the food safety community and fills a void in our food safety system. It is about using the Web to put as much available food safety information in one place as is possible. We provide timely reporting on food safety issues with contributed articles from food safety leaders and feeds from government, food industry, and other food safety authorities"
This information will be engaging to my students as we cover the objectives and standards of safety and sanitation. Food safety is definitely a part of current events and is a topic all should be well versed in.
Norwegion Cruise Line Culinary Opportunities on Facebook

This is a really cool Facebook page that makes me want to leave Teaching all behind in the classroom and expand my horizons...Litereally!! This site is maintained on Facebook by Norwegion Cruise lines and has over 87.000 likes. Careers in Culinary is one of our state standards as well as workplace employability skills. It is important to me to provide my students wth as many ways to dream about a career in culinary as possible. This link would be exactly what I need to get them "onboard".
